sights??

Post by Oldmac »

Been tossing this question around in my head for several days, trying to phrase it in a way that doesn't make me appear dumber than I am...

My idea of 'my perfect rifle' has always have a vernier sight, (the mid range model) with the #111 globe front...but I wonder if that would be the best choice for me...80% or more of the shooting I would do would be plinking and 'stump shooting' (as we call it down here), things for which the rear semi buckhorn/blade front would be more than suficent...and I would be using those standard sights...even with the vernier...So...since the globe front apparently has replaceable front sights...would a coarse post aperture work with the semi buckhorn rear? Or should i just get the vernier and get used to shooting with it, all the time?

I know this is a very basic question to you Sharps men, and those of you not thinking 'Geez, what a dummy' could possibly aid me...can I get some help, please?

Oh and almost forgot...Member 38-72 suggested a scope...but I don't particularly want a scope...none of my muzzleloaders have 'em...nor any of the BP rifles I have had has had a scope...It may well come to that, but I really would rather not have one.

Not all verniers are equally safe to shoot when folded back and using the barrel sights. Be sure you know what you are doing if that is your goal. There are verniers that do not have elevator knobs that are considerably, but not totally, safer.

I would use the MVA 104 Schuetzen with a globe post or blade for hunting or rock/stump busting. That short staff sight will still give you 50 MOA of adjustment above 100 yards on most 74 Shiloh's. That little tang sight will be out of the way folded down unless your stock is on the short side.
A midrange will catch you unless you put it in a sock.

This sight, is safer

than this sight

Both of the above can also be had with windage if wanted.

And this sight is one I've never seen before, but wish I owned it. Might have to buy 1 or 2 of them.

The bottom sight I would get for hunting and stumping but it would be hard to change the elevation in cold winter. Parts unknown has the knurled in the staff.

For the shooting you've described, I'ld just use the ladder sight, take a swiss file and open the rear sight notch a bit, just use the front blade.
If you're heart is set on a tang sight that bottom one in Brent's picture would be a good one, but I would recommend a baldwin globe front sight.

Don, though they are not called 'ladder sights' in my 2013 catalog, (new catalog on its way) I call the Shiloh 'standard' sights...(both buckhorn and semi buckhorn) 'ladder sights...much like the sights on the old H&R Trapdoor Springfield I used to have...two 'sight blades' you could sight in one for closer...and the second for a bit longer range..(100 yds and 200)...How far apart are we?

They must not be. I just looked and found nothing.

Those are the ladder sights. File the front sight down to bring poi to 100 yds with the sight folded down the rest of the marks on the staff may or not be close, but with a bit of shooting, you can figure out about where to set that elevator with the sight stood up to reach 1000 yds. Biggest problem is guessing hold off in the wind (kentucky windage) but if you're a roundball muzzleloader shooter, that will come easy enough.

Yes, but are they still being made under ANY name? I think Wyoming Armory used to sell them but they don't show them anymore. I don't know of anyone dealing in them. The Borchardt style of sight is good design and one that a lot of people, though not me, prefer. I just don't see them being available anymore, though I could easily have missed them somewhere.

A quick edit - looks like BACO sells them so they are still out there. BACO is out of stock on many models, but at least some of them are available.
