Fails to fire

Kirk, my 45-90 fails to fire on occasion. I get around 3 rounds out of twenty that I will have to shoot the round twice to get it to fire. Tried different firing pins, and have check the transfer bar. No broken firing pins or transfer bar. I am shooting CCI Bench rest primers. Is the main spring getting weak to cause this? Any suggestions? Thank you for your time. Barry Miller

I've had that happen a couple of times also. I usually pull the firing pin and clean all the recesses out and that solves the problem. Seems like a little brass or dirt gets trapped in the firing pin recess. Have had the same problem with a Savage 1899 and a couple of other rifles that I shoot a LOT.

Barry,
The rifle is broke beyond repair, and very unsafe.
I can use it for spare parts if you want to sell it cheap. I’ll bring it home to Missouri where it belongs.

I agree with bobw but while you're waiting I'll tell you of an experience I had years ago. A group of us were at a match and one of the group was shooting a 40-65 LRE that had seen a lot of service, and I mean a lot. It was doing the same thing, firing most of the time but then not. He had tried everything mentioned here and a few more, nothing fixed it. I had my 40-65 along but was shooting my 45-70. I went and took the block out of mine and we put it in his, problem solved. You be the judge.

Hey VectorMan, I thought your gun safe was already full. Thanks for the offer, however I think I will keep it.

DeadEye, I thought about switching it out with m y 45-70 block to see if it would fix the problem. I will give it a try. Thanks.

This happened to me 11-12 yrs ago and it was a broken mainspring. The rifle probably had 50,000+ rounds through it so not bad. Kirk fixed it right up and had me going in no time.
