Nice picture. Especially that 428gr 40cal bullet. Can see needing some of those for my 40-65 Hepburn with 1-in-14" twist.
BTW - who polishes your bullets for you?

Tell me more about "tuning driving bands to my chamber", please.hpguy420 wrote:Ya, that 428-gr, 1.45" long Paul Jones Money Bullet should be just the ticket for your rifle. The driving bands need to be tuned to your chamber design though.

Have a chunk of Cerrosafe that I need to melt-down and make a chamber cast. Will try to get it done today if Sandy doesn't knock out our power.
Have a Green Mountain 38cal 1-in-14" barrel. 0.369/0.377 per the factory and my slugged meaurements. More once I get the chamber cast. Thanks.

Did not loose power, but the torch is buried behind all the crap I had to move into the garage so it did not blow away in the hurricane. Probably get it dug out tomorrow or the next day.

Re: 4 Big-forty Fans
OK......... here is my chamber cast (first ever - still relatively new to this game). My measurements after one hour of cooling are, per my digital vernier: throat is 0.3775-0.378", bore is 0.3765"-0.377" and grooves are 0.3685"-0.369". Freebore is ~0.15" in length. Will also upload a pic of a couple of loaded rounds (335gr Lyman and 365gr BACo elliptical - gottaget a better polish on those bullets ). Thanks.hpguy420 wrote:Ya, that 428-gr, 1.45" long Paul Jones Money Bullet should be just the ticket for your rifle. SSShooter,
We presume that Bore is .3685-.369 and Groove is 0.3765-.377....

Do believe I got those backwards. Thanks. Also, looks like a 45 degree transition into the throat.beltfed wrote:SSShooter,

Re: 4 Big-forty Fans
While easy to confuse as both are BN cases, am shooting a 38-56. The picture below shows the difference between the 38-56 and the 38-70, which is a longer case with a 'less pronounced' bottleneck. Am shooting both 500m BPCR silhouette and mid-range target matches. My standard 500m/600yd load of 58gr of 3F is getting 1425fps at the muzzle with Swiss and 1385fps at the muzzle with Goex and 335gr bullet. Have not had the 365gr bullet in front of the chrony as am waiting for my next order of Swiss.

Re: 4 Big-forty Fans
Dan - thanks for the design. Would it be good for 38-70, as well assuming the same chamber?

Thanks, again. I'll post a pic of the Hepburn 40-65 chamber-cast once it is back in my hands (1st of the year?). Much appreciated.

Re: 4 Big-forty Fans
Hi Dan - in a 0.368" x 0.375" barrel with a 1-in-14" twist would one simply change the 0.378" bands to 0.375" and leave everything else the same? Thanks.hpguy420 wrote:Glenn,
Here's the bullet I suggest for top performance out to 600-yds for your chamber and barrel-twist-rate. Have Paul Jones make the mould. He has a nose cutter for this design.

Dan,
Could you please re-post the drawing for the Doc Lay Money bullet for a .40-65 Shiloh chamber? I know I have it somewhere, but am changing computers and have misplaced it.

Re: 4 Big-forty Fans
Dan,
I am VERY fond of my "Mistake" bullet. One thing that I like, and I do believe it helps with fouling/leading control, is the .050 grease groove in the middle of the .150" long bore riding section. Plus it shoots well out of a 16 twist barrel @ 423 grains in 20-1.
Clarence, I have seen bullets like the one Dan posted shot out to 600 and they are spot on. During a 15 shot string I haven't had any issues with controling the fouling via blow tube, however, in a 24 shot string @ Bogue Chitto I did a nose dive due to the fouling god's cracking there whip. FYI
Best, David B

Re: 4 Big-forty Fans
Dan,
That bullet shoots like a house afire in my 40-82 but you could NEVER get away with blow tubing.
Just shot a Creedmoor this weekend and although the weather was great with a high of 72 degrees it required double patching when shot over 80 grains of 1 1/2F Swiss.
Shot a 258 for second overall to Chip M who shot a 263 with his 44-77. (Same bullet shape)
Chip got the better spotter!!
(Not really as we both agreed on the call which was the one hiccup I had at 1000 yards)
To give you an idea of the wind conditions, I made five corrections between my first shot (X) and the second shot (8).

Re: 4 Big-forty Fans
Dan,
You're right, I shot an 80 with a miss!
Chip had an 83? with no miss.
We both had some vertical problems at all ranges.
It's funny but both of us substituted .030 wads for .060 wads and shortened the OAL.allowing the rounds to slide in rather than camming them. (We are both going back to the .060s and increasing the OAL))
These rifles (40-82 44-77) use the exact same windage settings at all distances but the come ups are less for the 40-82 (1450 fps).
