Zack, I'm thinking Woody had something to do with that 'designation' and I believe there was a suitable piece of art work designed to emblazon T-shirts and the like. https://www.shilohrifle.com/forums/view ... hp?t=18394 Pages and pages of discussion but the link to the art work is dead.

It has been two years since this thread was started and I have shot this 38 for almost an entire season. I will say that I am very pleased with the way it is shooting. I have only shot three master scores with it but there has been a slight learning curve with it so next season hopefully there will be more. I have shot one long range match with it. Disaster struck though when I had my estimated 1000 yard setting in for the 800 yard line. 900 yards I found paper and later that day on the last relay I shot an 86 with it which was the highest score at 1000 that day. I am going to shoot one more long range match with it this season and that will be 1200 yards next month. I am trying to figure out a way to get down to the big Regional down in Georgia next month. If I can’t make that then the last match at Friendship will end my season in November. One really really nice thing about this little pea shooter is the chicken load I have come up with. 47 grains of powder and 260 grain bullet make recoil almost non existent and my chicken scores have improved overall. Once the season ends I will put it on paper and see if the little changes I have made over this shooting season have resulted in tighter groups or see if they have remained roughly the same.

For my full throttle loads I am using an elliptical bullet that is 1.47” long. Weighs in At 360 grains when using 15:1. It is a straight sided paper patch bullet that I patch up to bore diameter. With that bullet I am using 64 grains of Swiss 1.5

Ian
What again is the twist of your 38-50?
MIne is a 10 twist and I am shooting my 1.46" long 371360E DDEPP bullet over the same 64.5 grains of Swiss 1.5

For those who were following the conversation on the long-range 40 thread here are the scores from the 1200-yard match. We were supposed to fire 3-10 shot relays on Saturday (1000,1100, and 1200) and two more relays on Sunday. This is an active military base so there are always people shooting. The area was really dry and because of that a range next to us had caught fire from the tracer rounds that were being fired from machine guns. The smoke was really interfering with sight picture and many of us were lucky to even hit the target. Because of this and other delays the 3rd relay scrapped, and it was decided that we would do two 15 shot relays on Sunday. Winds were typical Atterbury winds. Switchy at times. One of the skydivers thought the gusts were between 20 and 25MPH.

So here are some interesting tidbits. I'm not sure if this means anything at all but I have surveyed as many people as I can and I used less elevation than anyone else did when going to 11 and 1200. My windage adjustments were also in about the middle of the pack. I had 10 moa on the peak of the conditions on Saturday and 7.5 on Sunday. One more match for me this year and that will be at Friendship here in a few weeks. Hopefully we can land a couple more master scores to finish out the season. Although it has taken me a little longer than I thought it would to get it going I think it is pretty much there. Hopefully some good scores at the next match can confirm this

He was a big fan of the 38s for sure and it is quickly becoming my favorite caliber.

What's not to like? Less powder, lead, recoil, and if it shoots right along with the big .45's...

We had the same winds in Friendship, just 100 miles South. You will be surprised to see the amount of range work that has been done. Congrats to you long range shooters. See you in a couple of weeks.

I can’t wait to check it out. They have been doing a great job!!

I would also like to add that I have had 0 paper rings since the regional at friendship, which really has been the only time I really had them . I have always thought that these DanT chambers would be really good for bore diameter bullets, since they will support so much of the projectile. Almost all of the projectile is supported by the lands and will only have to upset into the grooves. I would like to preface that last statement though. If it was shooting good with paper rings then I wouldn’t worry about them. Paper rings are only a problem if accuracy is a problem. At Friendship Regional accuracy was a problem.

The first person to campaign the 38-50 that I ran into was Jim Ruble at the 2003 Quigley. Some of you may remember him and his lovely wife "the Digital Weasel". We had a party at the Restwel and they supplied most of the goodies and was great fun. IIRC, Jim was an engineer and knew what he was doing. He had a T-shirt made with a mosquito on it with the name, "Mosquito Gun" just for his rifle but don't remember anything about barrel, twist or loads. That's probably who Dan got the idea from and the for other small calibers that were pushed back then. Jim had a BPCR website that he supported for a while but then they just fell off the radar.
So, I has a question? We all know that the minimum for 1000 yd shooting is the 45-90 but the 110 is better. The 45-70 is marginal at best, no offense Steve, and the 40's just won't work, so how come Ian could do it with the 38-50? :D :o

Could be just luck. I’ll have to shoot a few more long range matches to know for sure but my friend Willie Pool did coin a new term. Since my wipers are much smaller than most Gophers or Bore Pigs we are going to call mine Ground Squirrels.
