Chris the chamber has a tight neck of .400" and the bullets when patched at the DD are right at .375" groove diameter and seating the bullet I have to twist it into a fired case neck on some of the cases that are not fully expanded. I found it takes at least 4 shots with a full load and the case is annealed every time to get the bullet to fit the case neck. Even with the case fired several times I can lift the loaded round by the bullet and it holds the weight of the shell.
The tight bullets take a firm hold on the bullet to twist it in the case when loaded.
I don't want to neck turn the case till I feel that they are fully formed.
measuring the necks, they are pretty consistent in thickness, they just need to be fired few times more.
I also have a couple hundred Jamison cases that I formed from .30-40 Krag brass and the case necks are a little tight than the Winchester.

Sorry Robert, it's been so long ago I didn't remember is you were out of school yet or still struggling with 8th grade math.

Yes, at 600 yds, the spotter is key to staying in the center.

Chris.
Chris - would be interested in a copy of DanT's 38-50 reamer print if you will share. Could you PM me with your contact info?
Thx.

Ian has been campaigning a 38-50 with PP this season and doing well out to 1000yd. Perhaps he will see this thread and have some comments.

I actually have Dan's chamber print on my web site:

I just heard back from Dave Manson and he has the actual print and will make them up.

Kurt, thanks for that info.

I had a Dan T reamer made for mine. Seems to be shooting very well. The Grafs brass I have is thick and I am using an inside neck reamer to get the ID if the fired brass .3765. The more I shoot it the more I am learning about it and am hoping to start putting master scores with it in alma. I shot a 30 with it a few weeks ago hitting 26 lay downs and 2 of the misses I called so it is coming along.

Thanks Ian, I somehow missed your post. You seem to be getting that rifle figured out. I have 110 pieces of Rem brass in various stages of fireforming and I just happened to find 100 pieces of Graf's .30-40 brass yesterday. I FL sized a few pieces and they chamber In my .38-50 bench rifle. That one has a fatter neck 0.402" from my chamber cast like the "factory" CPA chamber. I'll fireform a few next week to see what the OD of a loaded round ends up being. I haven't 100% decided on a reamer for the new rifle yet. I'm hoping the Graf's brass works out as they are probably the most reliable supply and I don't want any less than 250-300 pieces.

The Grafs brass seems to work fine but seems to shoot better when it has been reamed so that the ID if the fired brass matches that of the groove diameter. Since doing that to my brass the little unexplainable fliers have went away. With the DT chamber I am getting some poly rings with the bore diameter bullets and that was with the LDPE wads. The HDPE wads didn’t have any poly rings and they might shoot better than the LDPE anyways. I do get paper rings with the groove diameter bullets but as long as the accuracy is there then I’m not going to worry about the rings.
