40-60maynard

Post by big country »

I am shooting silhouette with 40-60 maynard.Using Rem.RB-30in. badger barrel-410 saeco(.409)-58gr.goex fffg-.320 compression-bullet seated to 1st driving band. Still only getting 2in.groups at 100yd. If anyone shoots this cartridge and has accuracy tips,I am all ears.

I have a 40-60 30" douglas bbl for my CPA 44 1/2 which I shot mostly in 2001. My best load for that year was 55 grs of Goex 2f under a .060 ldpe compressed .155 ". I use a PJ creedmoor at 30:1 weighing 424 grs sized and spg lubed at .411 ". The bullet comes out near .410 -411 so there isn't much sizing. The oal of the ctg is 3.090- 3.095 " so the bullet is out almost to the 2nd lube groove. Reckon you could say the bbl is throated somewhat. Just checked some of my group cards from back in 2001 and the best one with this load printed 8/10 into 1.4 moa at 300 meters on a pig cardboard silhouette. Don't know if I have any accuracy tips for you as you will have to find out what load will work the best in your rifle. This is a neat caliber to shoot and seems to be sufficient for silhouette work but I usually use 45-70's mostly even though I had my best score with the 40-60 to date and once ran 21 turkeys with it. The Paul Jones mold is the only one I have for the 40-60 so can't help you much with the Saeco or any others. Bob

big country,
I would load with less compression. My 40-65's never shot very well when compression got much over .250. But I was shooting 2Fg and Cartridge, I don't think that would make a difference. The heavier compression is usually found in the larger calibers. Start reducing your load by two grains and compare the fouling in the bore as well as the accuracy of each load. Then pick the best one and tinker with smaller changes in powder charge and don't worry about the compression.
Keep on hav'n fun!
