1000 yard group shot in 1878
In 1877 a young fellow pruchased a 20 lb. gun chambered for 45 2 7/8. In 1878 he sent a letter to Sharps with a record of the target he shot in 1878 at 1000 yards. He was using a 520 gr paper patched bullet.

Orville: that was d*mn good shooting!
Enlarging the target, I count 15-16 rounds?
Any indication of the total of shots fired & group size? I think the entry above the target reads a “perfect” score?
Any other mention of the rifle , load specifics, & the shooting regimen – blow tubing, wiping, etc?
What book is this in?
I’m always interested in how the old Shooters did it….

The artical is in the last issue of the Sharps Colletors Association. The gun was own by a Tollofson who was 18 years old when he ordered the rifle. The gun was fitted with a full length Maclom Scope with screw adjustments on the rear mount for elevation and also had mulitple cross hairs. There is no info on the load other then the 520 gr pp bullet. It was a target rifle so I would say the standard of the day was cleaning between shots. There is 15 rounds in the target record. There is a letter from him to the sharps factory looking for a 16 lb because the 20 lb had been blackballed from the shooting clubs in the area. The gun was 21 lb with the scope.

Here's the photo from Julia's Auctions from 2005 of what they state was the heaviest Sharps made.

Looking at the photos of the gun and scope it appears any adjustment for windage was in the front mount.
The gun and group may have been shot in no wind areas or where the range is flanked by timber.
