Time for Barry to do the deep layered panel work. This is what seperates the great engravers from the good engravers. Buckle up....
The panel to be left behind is masked out...
The full masking and protective borders..
Look and you can see the initial layering has been accomplished..How many layers? Looks like three (3), now serious detail can be laid in.
Compare that to the earlier, single plane shot and the orginal sketches.
Not bad for a toe plate! This is the same piece of steel found on page 2, the protective tow plate on the undersaide of the stock butt. Man, does that look great. Set these with engraved screw heads into XXX Presentation wood properly finished and you've got something special.
Here is the heel of the butt plate...
For those keeping track, we can see that Barry is working hard on the piece and great progress is made in just over a week. Lots of hours in prep and work and, well, it looks like a simply fantastic start.

Here is a good shot of the now completed lever.
By now, all the elements are coming together, The big work like the sides panels, the hammer, patch box and barrel are in process and I should be able to continue to post more shots.
When it all comes together, it should be really something to behold.

Thanks, David. Whereas the whole piece is quite alot of work for Barry, the most difficult part is about to begin. That is where the very fine detail is placed in the large receiver areas and the panels on either side, the patch box, the lettering on the barrel, etc.
Now I have to determine what the final finish will be on the metal surfaces. The thought is to go with French Grey as the silver pieces (all the trim and inlays) will always remain bright. Hope everybody is still enjoying this project. Stay tuned.
