Lee,
Don't forget the Gator tail... I'll tell you about it some time... oh heck I brought 4 lbs of gator tail home from Glynco when I was there for Computer fraud invest, class in 1989. Told the family it was "seafood" Cooked it the way the guy at the roadside BBQ told me to. everybody and I mean EVERYBODY went back for seconds. When i finally told them what it was they all liked it except for my youngest Daughter (14) She immediately started to lose it.
I will give you the results of my $100 buffalo hunt when I complete it in november.

Lee, think twice about investing in Koi. My neighbor put in a small pond, stocked it with small fish, only a couple hundred bucks each, and settled back to enjoy them.

Well about a week later I was standing on my patio having my morning coffee and first smoke of the day and happened to look up on his roof. There was a great big Blue Heron standing looking down at his back yard. At the time I didn't even know he had put the pond in. Well about 20 mins later he flew up out of the yard and headed elsewhere. I thought that was pretty neat and told the wife.

Next morning the same thing. I thought there must be something in Frank's yard I didn't know about so went to ask him about it. Come to find out he had got home late from work the night before and just went out and threw some food to the fish and then went to bed. He took me back to see the Koi, and there weren't any. That's when I told him about the Heron. Cost him a couple thousand bucks just in order to feed the bird and give me something to talk about for a few days.  I don't ever bring up the subject, only when I see him, for he got a mite touchy about it. Believe me Randy, I have no plans on investing in any kind of fish other than a dinner in a good restaurant. And no bloody heron is going to beat me out of it either.

Dave, the deep fried catfish here is always battered, but if it is done right the batter enhances rather than disguises the catfish. But then you can find that out for yourself, right?

Doc, I have tried gator a number of times, it is just not for me. I'd druther have a sack of raw oyster! MUCH druther! Or a nice lobster or most anything else.

Sorry Bill,
I didn't notice Chuck's question about sights. But I will be happy to tell him what I like and works for me.

Chuck,
My personal preferences are for the MVA Long Range Buffalo Soule with the Hadley eyecup tang sight, the Semi-buckhorn (semi so the tang sight can see over it) rear barrel sight from Shiloh and for a front sight I like Ron Heilman's spirit level globe with the Trigger Dr. sky-light. Ron doesn't have a web sight but his E-mail address is:

r.a.heilman@worldnet.att.net

I like his front sight better than any other I have tried. E-mail Ron and he'll send you some pictures of his sights. He is a very nice gentleman. By the way, and so are the folks at Montana Vintage Arms (MVA).

That's my humble opinion. I'm sure you will see other varying good opinions. But this is what I like and what works well for me.

Heron

Post by Omak Cowboy »

Since we are talking about Heron and Koi, I might mention that many of those keeping fish have had this problem.

Now Heron have funny knees..they bend backwards to ours and the birds will not jump into water. They wade in...so all one has to do is string a nice bit of wire and tie said wire to a good 'ol cow zapper. String the wire low..two strands is better then one and make it about 4 inches and maybe 12 or so inches high. Did it and the SOB who came by for a $1,000 luch the day before was still there when I got home. Face down in the pond! 8)

Course there is always the "Shoot & Shovel" method of dealing with these critters...only they are "protected" and it's best to aways obey the law. Right? RIght? Don't get too close to these fellows as they are about 3 ft tall and can and will go after with that beak. It's no accident that the Chinese have a highly effective Kung Fu - more properly known as WuShu system called Crane.

They do go down with just a pellet rifle shot as they are tall and have a large wingspan but are very light in body weight. Hit a crow once with a 221 Fireball...nothing but feet and feathers left. God only knows what a 540 gr would do to a Heron.

Otters and raccons are a problem too but the electric fence works pretty good there too. Netting across the pond is another solution. The black stuff to protect your fruit from birds is good as its barely visable.

Koi

Post by Omak Cowboy »

The oldest know Koi lived until about 4 years ago. She was I think 114 years of age and had been in the family all that time. Oddly enough Koi are not the only living thing of great age to be passed down in Japanese families. Bonsai live far longer - some in the 1,000 year range, though trees of 300 to 600 years are more common.

IN Federal Way, Wa the Weyerhause folks have a Bonsai exhibit that is on par with the National one in DC.

The fish in America while very pretty and not nearly so expensive as those in Japan. Here a nice fish can be $10,000 and up. A great fish $15,000 to $30,000 but in Japan a Grand Champion will be over $250,000. Kind of like keeping horses except there is so little space in Japan they do it with fish.

Lee,

Agree with you on the restaurant, mind you I have a fairly strict diet - if these isn't a dead animal in it I'll proberbly not have the meal.

Omak cowboy,

Now's there an idea to get rid of the birds, sling shot and any reject bullet castings.

Dave,

I'm definitely with you on the meal. I go along with that old Indian definition of vegetarian, "Lousy Hunter".

Omak,

Interesting analogy on the Japanese fish and horses. Of course they do have some horses in Japan. I've seen some of their archers on horseback with those Japanese bows. Boy, I have a 72" , D section English Longbow (Pacific Yew, not English or Spanish Yew unfortunately), but it is short compared to those babies.

But I digress again, don't I? Sorry.

bows

Post by Omak Cowboy »

Lee, the Japanese long bow is an interesting weapon. I had long wondered why the bow was so long and why the Japanese did not adopt the mongol recurve. Also was a mystery why the Japanese bow was shot from about the bottom 1/3 as I shoot from the middle.

The answer to both lies in the Buddhist culture as they were forbidden to use animal products. So..no composits like the Mongol, and worse no animal glues...so they had to stick with bamboo and use vegetable glue and the result was that it takes that looooong bow length to generate the same force found in a recurve made of hide, bone, or horn, and sinue and animal (hide) glue. Because the Japanese bow ends up soo long they have no choice but the shoot it from a mounted position using a grip they can reach - the botton 1/3.

Good thing they never got into a fight with English longbow men nor with the Mongols.

Chuck; Back on topic, and to let you know that there are others there to enable, I mean support you in dealing with our, I mean your addiction.

Just my advice, screw the heart medicine, we're all gonna go sometime, better to go a happy man! Tell the daughter that McDonalds has a great management trainee program, better yet stop by for a shake and fries and pick up an app and mail it to her, She'll see you care. When that baby arrives greet it at the end of the drive and spirit it into the house when the wife isn't looking. Show her your near empty safe and tell her it's your last one, you sold all the expensive ones for your daugters tuition. Ask her if it is OK if you keep just one for your declining years. It will be a win-win situation all around. Life is tolerable if you just think things through, plan for it, and have your priorities set right!!!

Money well spent, your gonna have a great time. You know I'd sleep with mine if the wife wouldn't complain so about it.

Omak, the Japanese did get into it with the Mongols. That's where the term "Kamikaze" came from. Divine Wind. It sank the Mongol vessels when they were about to invade Japan. :) Randy

250,000 fish??????? and race horses?

How do you put a saddle on them slimey little suckers?

I used to have alot of respect for the Japs, Its changed, My wife went to the islands a few years back to vist a friend of hers that she went to school with. At my urging she went to Pearl Habor to see the AZ memorial. She saw a group of about 50 or so Japs having a party on the memorial, yeah that is right drinking and laughing while using hand signls to show dive bombing and torp runs. On top of a US War Grave.

Karen is not a real history buff like me, but she was very insulted and pissed off that this was allowed. She mentioned in loud English, wonder how they would feel if a bunch of Americans went to Hersohmia and held a party at Ground Zero? a few heard her and were upset but said nothing.

As you know that sort of thing would be an international inncident and would cause a big stir if Americans did such a thing.

I pointed out something to one of these folks a couple years back in CA after he pointed at my Shiloh Coat and Called me a gun crazy American.
I said:

Look 50 plus years ago you started the fight, We FINISHED IT. We nuked your butts into the stone age and most likely should of left you there. In the past 50 years about all your culture has done is screwed with America, bad monster flicks and Kiddie porn comics, and not done one thing to help the rest of the world. Take your Nikon and paddle your butt back home.

Ok Got that off my chest:

Lets get back to talking about guns?
