45-2.6?

I purchased a Shiloh 45-2.6 that was on consignment. When I received the rifle and inspected it I found that the Action is Shiloh with a Serial #72xx, and the barrel is marked CSharps. I'm assuming it is an early gun before the split. I removed the forearm and on the bottom of the barrel it is stamped Shiloh same serial number, however the 45 90 stamped in the barrel has a 1 stamped through the 9 and a 0 added. this tells me it was rechambered,My big question is the brass that came with the gun is Starline 2.6, I received some loaded ammo with it and it had a heavy crimp with the bullet seated all the way in the case to the top driving band. when I measure the fired Brass with my verniers at the mouth I get.490 and the ID at the neck is .468. I like to run with light tension that I can hand seat the bullets and this is awful loose with .459 bullets. So I'm thinking of Paper Patching any Ideas On bullet size? Are these normal Demensions?

That seems really really big. Is there any chance that the rifle has been rechambered to an even longer cartridge?

As for a longer chamber i'm not sure, I guess I will have to get some cerrosafe and take a casting. I tried this once before in another rifle and it did not work out to well. I can try again.

Chaz,

Something is not right.
My Shiloh .45 2.6" starline fired brass measures OD .479", and ID .459" at the case mouth fired in my .45 2.6 Montana Roughrider.
You might be able to stick a dowel of the right size down, and get an idea how long the chamber is.
It could be a 2 7/8" or even 3 1/4.
Or even worse somebody screwed up with the rechambering.

Good Luck. :D

Bob.

Did you measure the case length to make sure someone hasn't cut the brass down?

I checked the brass it is .015 short at 2.585.

I also did a preliminary check of the chamber length with my verniers running it in to the leade, it does seem a little long but not 2 7/8. I will try and do a casting tomorrow.

Chaz,

Your rifle should date from late 1985-early 1986, based on the fact that one of mine, #78xx, was built late summer 1986.

I'd do a chamber cast. If it's not a longer case, the chamber is badly oversize.

I took a casting of the chamber and it appears that it is 2.690 in length from bottom of case up to where the lead starts. I have a picture but do not know how to post it. so it is longer than the 2.6 but shorter than the 45-110 as I believe that 2.875. I'm thinking I can buy 45-110 brass and trim them to the correct length of the chamber.

What about the diameter at the end of the chamber?

The lead is .460, the case opening is .490.

Is the chamber concentric with the lead?

It sounds to me like either an unpiloted reamer poorly applied or an oversize reamer.

Sounds like to me that someone went and ran a throating reamer in to change a 2.4 with a free bore chamber by changing it to a 2.6 using a poorly designed throating reamer.
