OE 1.5 lot E1-06/16AU04B

Has anyone tried lot "E1-06/16AU04B" of OE 1.5?

I just bought a batch and am surprised by the low muzzle velocities I'm getting. The powder seems nearly as weak as Schuetzen FFg.

For the last couple of years my OE 1.5 has come from a single earlier lot and was much more energetic. Normally my loads for OE 1.5 have slightly higher average velocities than Swiss 1.5 for an equivalent volume.

With the old lot my .45-70 shoots a 530gr Money bullet at 1280 or so fps with a 70gr charge. With the new lot in my .45-90 I'm getting ~1255 fps using 78gr and a 535gr Money bullet.

That's nearly 100 fps slower than my 45-2.4" load using 81gr of Swiss 1.5.

Chris.

Hmmm that is disapointing. I thought one of the advantages of the Olde Eynseford was that they had huge batches and they blended between batches to help reduce lot to lot variations?

The velocities are pretty consistent at least. Once the barrel "settled in" the next 11 shots had an SD of just under 4.9fps which isn't bad for a first try with a fresh batch of powder. I only bought 10 lbs of this lot to test it.

The powder does look a bit shinier than the last lot too. It actually looks more like Swiss. After the low velocity readings I had to double check to make sure they didn't give me Fg.

Hopefully someone else has tried this lot and will chime in. I think Don goes through a lot of this stuff.

Chris.

gunlaker,
have you tried comparing "apples and apples"?
Like, use same rifle, same WEIGHT of powder vs the old lot and vs Swiss 1.5

This is my first day with the new powder lot so I've yet to do any other tests.

What is the scale weight difference between the 2 lots, with the same volume?
I had a similar issue many years ago with reg Goex 3F.
The new lot was much lighter-When I up'd the volume to equal the weight of the older lot. Everything was good.

Lumpy,

That's the way I have always done it when switching lots with Swiss 1 1/2 , keep the charge weight the same by adjusting the volume. Early this year when I had to make the transition to my new lot of Swiss I followed that rule in both my .45-70 with 83.0 grains & my .40-65 with 72.0 grains, never missed a beat. Once I had the new volumes it was just like nothing had changed at all.

I did not check velocities, but sight settings remain the same so the velocities must be close.
