Kirk - I believe I've read here in old posts that you recommend the RCBS 40-70 straight dies for your chambers - is that correct? Buffalo Arms has the 4D dies back in stock but I wanted to confirm before I bought.

They will probably be fine, just have to try them. I have just always had good luck with RCBS.

Thanks. I'll stick with what works.

FWIW, my 40-70 Straight Shiloh has always functioned perfectly with ammo loaded in my Lyman 40-70 SS dies. Shoot straight, rdnck.

Thanks - I ordered a set of RCBS with a length trimmer. I'm planning now on using 405 Winchester cases so the dies may wind up being relatively useless. We'll see how this all shakes out.

If you have the rifle chambered as a 40-70 Straight with the Shiloh 40-70 reamer, you will have trouble with both rim thickness and rim diameter with Hornady 405 brass. BTDT. The 30-40 Krag brass and the Jamison brass works better, especially the Jamison. With the Hornady brass you will have to shoot paper patched bullets, unless you neck turn your cases. Shoot straight, rdnck.

Thanks - I'm trying to nail down all the details of using 405 brass. I will check with Kirk and see what 405-friendly reamers he has in-house - I think he's done this before. If necessary I'll just buy the reamers. Arnie has kindly pointed me to some important specs. And this will be a paper patch rifle, pure and simple. No interest in anything else really.
