Re: 40 2-5/8"
When i was hunting with my 2&7/8 i just put a thinner patch on the bullet. And went to a 446 size one from 449. Still shot just fine for hunting and the soft alloy you are using bumped up fine. The bullet had plenty of clearance in the throat as well.

Thanks powderburner, i must have 2500 sheets of 8lb, 9lb, 55W and some other 55? paper around here, it came in the same pile of goods i found the RMC cases in, guess i certainly have plenty to experiment with should the need arise with this or any other BPCR rifle i have.

Re: 40 2-5/8"
Well, since my new full chamber length RMC cases are not here yet due to the supply chain, i had machine shot Bud mill my base pour Brooks grease groove mould down for a bullet length of 1.125, this mould is a copy of the Lyman 410655 with a couple thousandths smaller nose for hunting, the bullet at 40-1 alloy weighs 345 grains, reading that the 40's made their hay with 330-370gr bullets i'll give this one a try.
This rifle with 45 degree chamber has been a hard fouler with all powders tried, I now have room for a 0.100 grease cookie under the bullet, it all sits on a 0.012 playing card wad, all in the neck, i can now fire 5 rounds without wiping or blow tubing, load and unload with ease, also let the rifle sit for 6 hours, pushed a dry patch through the bore, the fouling remained soft, 100 yard shooting was very promising, haven't had time to shoot more yet, as for now i think i have my deer/pig load, the formed 348 Winchester cases are only 2.615 long, didn't even chronograph the 90gr charge of Goex 1F, don't think a deer will care, will revisit my 400gr paper patch loads when the RMC brass gets here.

Re: 40 2-5/8"
a short note about BA shells for the 40''s. I use the 30 40 cut Craig that they sell in my 40 70 SS and they have always worked great and I've had many reloading's without problems.

Norma like every one else has a tough time keeping up these days. If you you can imagine a 40-70 2.5" ss these fan boys around here would all be screaming for joy. That's why the 40 bn's are better because you can make them from norma, well if you got big pockets anyway. Bobw

Bob, the Norma goodness stretches all the way to the end of the 45 cal rifle spectrum as well, i own a beautiful '74 Shiloh #3 Sporter 30 inch #1 heavy 18 twist barrel in everyone's favorite red headed bastard step son cartridge, the 45 3-1/4, i load it with 100gr OE 2F compressed with one 0.012" playing card wad, 0.200" Black Magic grease cookie sitting on the wad, Black Magic lubed 1881 Saeco greaser with 16-1 alloy in next, bullet sits on the cookie.
Velocity is an easy to shoot 1488 fps, have already tested, you can shoot that rifle all day, let it sit for 24 hours, then push a dry patch through the bore, the fouling, imho remains a greasy lubricating slurry, perfect for me as i dont match shoot, great hunting rifle with full buckhorn rear and Bagwell copper penny front sight, if the wind isn't blowing a million miles an hour you can pick the 700 yard correlation mark on the buckhorn ladder and wear my 3' x 3' square gong out at 700 yards, Kirk's crew done a damn fine job on the re-barrel.
Norma brass is good stuff!

Re: 40 2-5/8"
Gunner my younger brother picked up a LRE used but unfired in 45 x3 1/4 for a real decent price a few years a go and asked if I could load for it. SURE I said but I of course I had to have the gun to do that. So he brings it out and hands it off to me. The second load I tried was a 566gr. ppb wrapped to .449" with 116 grs of Fg goex. Worked fine shot well. Wasn't a load I'd want shoot all day but it was educational and somewhat more pleasant than was lead to believe by local experts. Sometime in the next week or so a lgs dealer buddy of mine is getting a collection of originals in , looking forward to that. Hope you winter well. Bobw

Re: 40 2-5/8"
Was competing at a BPCR Silhouette match yesterday. Winter visitor from New Hampshire came by to observe and remarked he had his 40 SBN sleeved to 45-70 and was much happier with the Shiloh in 45-70 than when it was 40 2 5/8. Just sayin'

Straight face? No problem because he did not mention any adventures in a land fill.
