All my .45 caliber rifles are straight cases and the straight cases only leave about .002” of fouling in the barrel just ahead of the case mouth so I shoot bullets just .004” smaller than the bore diameter in my .40 2 1/2 SS, .40-65, .45 2.1, 2.5, and 2 7/8. For a .45 caliber rifle the bullet is .440” with a .006” patch for a .446” bullet. Bottle neck cases leave nearly twice the fouling in the bore just ahead of the chamber so I use a bullet that’s at least .008” smaller than the bore. The bullet mold for my .44 2 1/2 SBN casts a bullet that patches to .009” below the bore diameter. That’s .423” as cast plus .006” of paper patch. With properly loaded ammunition it will shoot at least 10 to 15 shots with accuracy more than adequate for hunting to 350 yards.

From that I gather you are shooting PP not grease groove bullets.

Just read back & need to correct an entry of mine from earlier.. probably self evident when in context but just to clarify.... " first three bands at .449"
...ie. not the 459. My bad. Too many numbers.

A shooting buddy of mine wanted to experiment with a bullet seated well out in his 45/70 and so we worked on a projectile at 1.42" long. 1st three bands at .449, 4th tapering .454/.456 and last two at .459. In his rifle, this bullet can be seated with just the two base bands in the case and shoots very well to date with no leading evident. hth.

Anyone using the NASA type bullets that is willing to share their experiences with the design?

I used a version of the NASA shortened for the 1-18 twist barrel on my 45-110 barrel, worked very well for me in 2006 at Raton. It was also the bullet I used to make that first hit at 1 mile.

If I were to go back to greasers, I start with it.

Yes I’m shooting PP bullets now almost exclusively. It’s been aver a decade since I’ve shot bore diameter greased bullets. As I recall they shot just as well as GG or PP groove diameter bullets or PP bore diameter bullets but I saw no advantage over PP bullets so I didn’t continue with them. But they do work well in our long range muzzle loading rifles. The BACo. catalog is full of reduced band bullets so some body is shooting them, but I shoot the longer cases so I don’t need them.
