45-110

Post by KenSt »

If I have a rifle bored for 45-110, can I fire 45-70 in it?
I am thinking this is the same situation as firing a .38 Special round in a revolver bored for .357 cartridge. The bullet would have to make the jump into the forcing cone but it seems doable.

Yes, you can shoot a shorter round in a .45- 27/8" (AKA .45-110) chamber. However, any semblance to accuracy will go the window.

On a whim, I once shot numerous 45-2.1” (AKA .45-70) rounds in my .45-2.4” (AKA .45-90) @ 100 yds. Some of the bullets did not hit the 24”x24” backer. The resulting bullets that did hit the target & backer looked more akin to a shotgun pattern than a group….

KenSt,

Another factor you need to consider is that extended firing of .45/70 in a .45/110 chamber can produce severe leading of the forward end of the chamber over a period of time that can be extremely hard to remove and will then prevent chambering of .45/110 cartridges. It is generally just not a good practice.
