Re: Patching to groove
OP, are you going by weight on your powder charge?
Try compressing without wad and then add wad and compress again.
.400 is a bit much.....

Re: Patching to groove
I measured volume then used my scale to repeat accurately.
I will try a little less bp and only a .200 compression.
See what we get.

Re: Patching to groove
One last newbie question ( at least today ).
Can I make the paper narrower, so I can move the bullet further into the barrel and get more powder in the case?
I know everyone tells me to wrap just below the ogive.
Is there a reason. I couldn't wrap .200 under the ogive ?
Trying to figure out if I should play with this?

Ok you guys i have been playing this game for over 20 years now and i still do not understand why you want to put dippers on your bullets can some one explain why you want to do this ??? Seams like alot of extra work for what a little more powder in the case?? To me you dont need to be that fast to be accurate ammo !!! My bullets are experienced they do not need dippers !!!!!

A better question is why do you shoot buffalo rifles at all. They are 150 year old technology.
It's all about the nastalgia.

There's of course another good reason: no leading, or rather much less chance of getting leading. And it sure looks classy

Because some folks enjoy it? Because they make exceedingly neat clean holes in abandoned appliances? (I only shoot greasers, but I love the dialog of the paper patch guys. )

You can always give it a try. Worst case scenerio is you get a little leading.Drahopa7 wrote: ↑Thu May 11, 2023 8:04 pm One last newbie question ( at least today ).

Or you can try camming your shell in if you patch out to ogive and don't seat deeper.
Patchbox and SSShooter both make ones that work

Re: Patching to groove
I pour a .449 bullet in 1-20 .
Wrap to .456
Shooter 62.
Why would you learn to tie a fly fishing lure, learn to fly fishing to catch a tiny trout?
A grenade would do the trick.
Learning the skill and finesse is the journey.
It's the learning I crave.
Plus the damn bullets scare the shit out of everyone at the range!

Re: Patching to groove
The reason I asked about your before and after patching diameter is that when my patch is not close to the ogive the bullet can bump up and touch the lands of the bore which has caused leading for me. But then again it may be different if patching close to groove diameter as you are. I have not tried patching to bore yet.
