So how is this done Kenny? You have scorers in hardened pits in radio contact at the target and after a certain amount of shots the range is cleared, hits recorded and target repainted?
Would you need a miss spotter closer than say 1200 to 1500 yards to walk the shots on? Does the dust kick up well so misses can be seen?
Sure hope a lot of pictures are taken as this has got to be won of the most interesting shoots ever. Thats a mighty fer piece even for a BMG sniper rifle.
690 fps reminds me of a 455 Webley at the muzzle. Still hate to try a catch in a ball glove. It would go plumb through a body so unfortunate to be hit even at a mile.
Wonder what power factor the Raton boys would assign to this distance ?
What you need is an old armored car for the pit crew. MD

I wonder if the shooters will need to support their chins on cross sticks? How about the front sight picture? Maybe a tilted globe like Jim Kluskens makes would be the ticket.

I know that my new LR Creedmoor scope mount is suposed to make it with a 23 inch tube, but will have to take the front sight off!

The Spotter will be 3-400 yards off to one side and bout 500 from the target, well out of the line of fire, as dry it is dust will sure kick up when you miss.

Lots of spotters will be the order of the day.

It is fun to speculate on a mile shot. I would love to try. Perhaps, I'll spot a rock and take a shot while I'm out in Northeast WY this fall chasing mulies. But in the meantime, I thing aim points would greatly facilitate dealing with windage issue, with staffs too short (my MVA long range would be a little too short I think), and with stock position. A sighting target that would approximate a holdover for 1000 yds would allow one some ability to cozy up to one's favorite lump of walnut. And secondary sighting targets that are 15-20 minutes left and right of that, would handle the most severe winds without radical windage settings and again, troublesome stock positions.

I'm sure Kenny can whack this all out in a couple of minutes of work. anybody who can " Can easy make a 12 foot wide by 8 foot tall target outta that stuff." can whip up a few sighting targets ;)

Sounds like lots of fun to me.

I don't think we will need sighter targets, 30-44 minutes of windage should cover normal conditions. Anything rougher will result in the luck factor playing a greater role. After all, this is an off hand match.

Most sights have only about 20 minutes of windage either side give or take a bit.

But hell, I thought this was a pistol match!

Brent,

The Buffalo Soule and the XLR both have 44-45 MOA left and Right. Plenty of windage. The XLR is just a taller MVA Buffalo Soule. Often at my match we have used 23 to 28 MOA windage at 1000 yards!

Bryan will do offhand, he is so tall he thinks that will give him 15-20 MOA advantage.
The rest of us idiots will be shooting prone or off the bench!

I will get alot of pictures it should be a Historical ie hysterical event!

Kenny
I would like to be there but I don't think I can make it this year. If you do it again I'll be there as it will be a great place to try out the new 20 lb gun if it's done. I'll see you this weekend and I have the patch template for you.

I've been practicing my off hand at a mile position. I think I've about got it. It looks more like hip shooting with a long sight staff. No worries about cheek weld to the butt stock but follow thru is a bear.

Well Kenny I had every intention of coming up to shoot with you guys, but Wendy had to go and remind me that we already had plans for that weekend. Got to visit the ranch and your folks on the way home from Alliance though. Your parents are awesome. We had a really nice albeit to short visit.

Man this sounds like a job for my big .50.
I know I can get 1323.4 fps pushing a 718 grain bullet with 115 grains of 2F Goex Express, and a magnetic protractor "C" clamped to the barrel for a sight
But man that load hurts sooo good :(

Kurt--

Have you considered clamping a 20 lbs protractor to the barrel, or bolting your rifle into a machine rest?
