Paul Jones mould
Hi All
Have been shooting BP a while, but never cast my own bullets. Have a chance to buy a Paul Jones 530 gr, mould and noticed the stamping on the sprue plate looks different than in the PJ article in Spring 2014 black powder cartridge.
Sprue plates i have seen are of the pattern "P and D Jones 45xxx", this one says "Paul Jones 45/70". Supposedly this is an older one - the sprue plate shape is identical to the PJ sprues i have seen, and the mould looks every bit a PJ mould?
Appreciate any feedback.
Thanks
Craig

Re: Paul Jones mould
I would be much more concerned about weather or not it throws a good bullet and if the design of the bullet suits you and your gun. Paul Jones made some excellent molds, of which I have several, but just because it has Paul Jones on it does not mean it is going to through the perfect bullet for your gun. I would think it is probably a genuine PJ mold and it will throw a good bullet, but make sure it is the design you want. These days, you can get Steve Brooks or other custom makers to make exactly what you want and they are just as good as a PJ mold. Also, Buffalo Arms has a bunch of designs that are excellent and are just as good as my PJ molds.
hope this helps, Cody

I think that "D" is for David, Paul's son.

Paul cut the mold for the rifle specified in the order.
If it was spec'd for a 'Peter' then the nose may well be to fat.
The 'D' on the mould is for David. Paul's brother and partner in the tool cutter business they owned.
I would see if the seller would let you cast a few bullets with it.
PJ made many different .45 cal rifle moulds. There has to be some type of ID as to what bullet.

PJ used SAECO mould blocks.
I would suggest you get some pictures of this mould and post'em up for us to see.
Make sure these pictures show the maker's ID.

Re: Paul Jones mould
It's a Creedmore Nose with full size bands if it's like mine just like it. KO Roos sent me a mold 15-20 yrs ago and this is the way it is marked. Some people refer to them as 1st Generation PJ molds. If your rifle is a Shiloh, or another brand of rifle with .458 groove. I personally would try a few "as cast" and see how they shoot. I would bet they will do just fine sitting on top of 62-64 grains of Swiss 1.5.

Will PJ Moulds eventually become collector items like old cars and rifles?

They already are !!! Have you seen the prices that they are bringing. A 45 cal PJC with the marking as described above brought like $375 on Ebay last week !!! At that price I wouldn't be surprised to see a $500 Money Bullet soon .

Re: Paul Jones mould
Cannot sell my P&D Jones 45005 mould on this forum.
Guess I will have to list it on E-Bay.
